Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek acupuncture. Whether acute or chronic, pain often reflects not only tissue injury but also nervous system sensitisation, circulation issues, muscle imbalance, and stress.
From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture helps modulate pain signals by influencing the central and peripheral nervous systems. It can reduce muscle tension, improve local blood flow, and decrease inflammation. This makes it particularly useful for conditions such as neck and shoulder tension, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, knee pain, back and lower back pain, hip and groin pain, ankle/wrist sprains, sciatica, hand/foot pain, arthritis, headaches, and migraines.
Traditional Chinese Medicine views pain as a disruption in the free flow of Qi and Blood. Stagnation, deficiency, or imbalance can all contribute to discomfort. Treatment focuses on restoring smooth circulation, supporting affected organs, and correcting underlying patterns that predispose the body to pain.
Acupuncture is commonly used for:
• Muscle and joint pain
• Nerve pain and neuropathy
• Sports injuries and repetitive strain
• Tendonitis and bursitis
• Post-injury and post-surgical recovery
Acupuncture is also used for internal condition related pain, such as abdominal pain, period pain, cancer and cancer treatment related pain, and so on.
Many patients experience reduced pain, improved mobility, and better sleep as treatment progresses. Importantly, acupuncture does not simply suppress symptoms—it aims to restore balance and function to prevent recurrence.
